Our Beginnings

St Peter’s Loxton began in 1897, before the town was officially established. Worship first took place in local homes, supported by visiting pastors like Rev. L. Kuss from Mannum. As more Lutheran families settled in the area, the small house church soon overflowed. In 1904, the congregation built its first church—a simple stone building on land donated by J.H.F. Drabsch, overlooking the Murray River. On dedication day, over 200 people gathered to celebrate. As the congregation grew, a resident pastor was called in 1910, and a manse was built. The parish soon included Bookpurnong and Paringa. By the 1920s, with over 300 members, the need for a larger church became clear. Construction of the current church began in 1924, and the foundation stone was laid in January 1925. The church was officially dedicated on March 7, 1926, with around 2,000 people in attendance. Its striking Gothic-style tower became a landmark—one that still stands today as a symbol of faith and community.
